Factory Design and Workflow Optimisation
Project type
Manufacturing Design
Date
March 2025
Location
Bristol, United Kingdom
This project focused on the adaptation of an existing agricultural building into a fully functioning manufacturing facility. The process began with a site visit to assess spatial constraints, structure, and access, supported by analysis of existing site documentation. Using this information, the building was reconstructed as a complete CAD model in Revit, combining measured observations with available drawings.
To inform the factory design, the product intended for manufacture was developed at a 1:20 scale hand-built model. This was used to analyse manufacturing processes, construction logic, and production feasibility. The complete manufacturing workflow was then broken down, reviewed, and sequenced to define all operational requirements. The factory layout was designed around these findings, prioritising efficient workflows, clear process flow, and effective use of space.
The final outcome was a process-driven factory design optimised to reduce TAKT time at each station and minimise the effort required by operators on site.
