Abbey Road Recording Console Restoration and Quality Assurance
Project type
Restoration
Date
October 2023
Location
London, United Kingdom
Worked as a hardware engineer and quality assurance specialist on the restoration of the historic recording console used to record The Beatles’ Abbey Road album. The role focused on fault isolation, component-level inspection, and functional verification across the entire desk prior to auction.
Identified and isolated a manufacturing defect within the potentiometers that was causing widespread signal instability across multiple channels. Resolving this issue materially improved performance and contributed to an estimated £70,000 increase in the desk’s sale value.
Conducted detailed quality control checks on fit, position, and signal output for every control knob across all 24 channels. This involved repeated cycles of deconstruction, cleaning, solder joint inspection, reassembly, and functional testing as refinements were implemented by the chief audio engineer.
Prepared and quality-assured the console before and after transportation to Bonhams, supporting its successful sale at £2.2 million. Liaised with suppliers to support the design and production of replacement front panels, ensuring dimensional accuracy and fidelity to the original hardware.
